The New York Film Academy is thrilled to announce our newest year-round campus in Madrid, Spain.
MADRID
Madrid is not only the nation's capital, it is also the most cosmopolitan and vibrant city in Spain. It combines a grand classical heritage with a cutting-edge sense of fashion and design. It is a wonderfully walkable city, linked by charming squares that define the character of its many neighborhoods. For the great Spanish Director, Pedro Almodovar, Madrid provides the canvas, palette and muse for his best work. For example: "Villa Rosa bar in the Plaza Santa Ana (Square) is the location of the most famous scene shot in Almodovar’s 1991 film “High Heels”. Today the bar is a great place to have tapas, listen to flamenco influenced pop music and enjoy the tiled murals depicting pastoral scenes from Andalucia on the façade." New York Film Academy students will be inspired by the energy, beauty, and warmth of this great city.
Often compared to New York, the energy of Madrid continues to draw the most creative and passionate people to its streets, often long into the night. Whether visiting the museums, learning from the master works of Goya, El Grecco, Dali and Picasso, or filming in the local streets, markets, or countryside, the Madrid campus promises to provide students an unforgettable experience, its indelible imprint will be seen in the work our students create.
EL MUNDO
The New York Film Academy in Madrid is located in the headquarters of “Mundo Ficcion," the film and television production unit of the media giant "El Mundo". Located in one of the most popular areas of Madrid, the famous Prosperidad neighborhood, the school is in walking distance to a variety of stores, restaurants, bars and cafes. Students can visit the “Berlin Park” or walk along one of the longest streets of Madrid, the “Lopez de Hoyos” street. They can practice their favorite sports, enjoy a swim in a pool, play tennis, or simply sunbathe at the “Polideportivo Pradillo," an arena located directly in front of the campus.
Students will benefit from the Academy's collaboration with El Mundo, as they will of the opportunity of learning and shooting in their state the of art film and television studios, at Torrejon de Ardoz.
LIVING IN MADRID
A walk through Madrid's center is a walk through history. Near to the Plaza Mayor is the so-called "aristocratic centre" of Madrid, home to the stunning Royal Palace, a 17th century monument that combines Baroque and Classical styles. Next to the palace one can find the Plaza de Oriente (square), the Opera House and the modern Almudena Cathedral, consecrated in 1993 by Pope John Paul II. This ensemble of monuments is completed by the Puerta del Sol, a square flanked by select shops, and the "Paseo del Arte", an area known for its unique museums, palaces and gardens, as well as the unmistakable Bank of Spain building, the Palacio de las Telecomunicaciones, and the Cibeles and Neptuno fountains.
Art and culture are central to Madrid life. The city has 73 museums covering all fields of human knowledge and expression. Of these, the most important are the Prado Museum, one of the world's greatest art galleries, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum holding more than 800 paintings, sculptures, and tapestries ranging from the earliest Dutch masters to the most avantguard trends, and finally the Reina Sofía National Art Centre, dedicated to Spanish contemporary art, including works by Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and Juan Gris among others.
In addition to its history and culture, visitors and residents of Spain alike can enjoy the sun, go for walks, go rowing, or simply feed the squirrels in Madrid's large, impeccable parks and gardens. The Retiro Park, once playground of Spanish Monarchs, the Casa de Campo, and the Juan Carlos I Park among others make Madrid one of Europe's greenest capitals.
If there is one thing, however, that characterizes Madrid, it is the deep, contagious passion for life reflected in its friendly, welcoming people. Madrid boasts concerts, exhibitions, ballets, theatre, and the latest cinematographic releases. Students can sample a wide variety of the finest Spanish and international cuisine available as well as enjoy shopping in traditional and local establishments and world-famous outlets stocking the finest international brands.
Madrid's exciting nightlife is another major attraction. Its pubs, bars, discos, and flamenco clubs offer a varied and vibrant mix of entertainment and relation, while by day there are traditional verbenas (open-air dances) and festivals including the San Isidro bullfighting festival, considered to be the most prominent festival of its kind in the world.
