Learn to Make a Short Film at NYFA

In this intensive summer film camp, students aged 14-17 are introduced to the filmmaking and content creation process. Under the guidance of expert instructors, aspiring visual storytellers learn how to make a short film, building skills in visual storytelling and film production. No experience is required to attend.

Program Description Camp Name: 1-Week Filmmaking Camp for Teens

The 1-Week Filmmaking Program is an immersive, hands-on course designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of visual storytelling. Over the course of a week, students will explore the director’s craft, learning how to translate ideas into compelling visual narratives using the digital format. Through structured lessons and practical exercises, they will gain experience in all key aspects of filmmaking.

Core Subjects

Students will engage in the following core subjects throughout the program:

  • Director’s Craft: Students will explore the language of filmmaking and learn how to make creative and technical choices that bring their vision to life.

  • Writing: Students will be introduced to the basics of story structure before shifting focus to workshopping their own film ideas, developing a foundational understanding of storytelling principles.

  • Hands-On Camera and Lighting: Through practical exercises, students will gain essential training in capturing visually engaging images and working with light to enhance storytelling.

  • Digital Editing: Students will be introduced to the post-production process, learning fundamental editing techniques and applying them using Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve.

By the end of the program, each student will have written, directed, shot, and edited a 2-3 minute non-dialogue film, meaning it will not include any dialogue, written or spoken, relying purely on visuals, music, and sound effects to tell their story, while also gaining experience as crew members on their classmates’ projects, ensuring through this immersive approach, a well-rounded, collaborative filmmaking experience, and a completed short film to showcase their skills.

LEARN TO MAKE A SHORT FILM ONLINE

In our 1-Week Online Filmmaking Camp for teens, students aged 14-17 learn how to make films. This workshop is held from 4:30pm to 9:00pm (IST/ India Standard Time) with one half hour break. During this camp, students write, direct, shoot, and edit their own short film. Additional work, including exercises and homework, is completed during the weekday evenings. This may include the execution of the shooting plan and post-production​.

No experience is required to attend.

Program Description

The 1-Week Online Filmmaking Program (IST) is designed to adapt the hands-on experience of our on-campus 1-Week Filmmaking Program into a fully interactive remote learning experience. This course provides an immersive introduction to visual storytelling, focusing on the essentials of filmmaking using a phone or any camera the student has access to. With an emphasis on practical, naturalistic lighting and mobile-friendly editing tools, students will develop the skills to create compelling visual narratives while working in a home or remote setting.

This version of our program is scheduled to run on Indian Standard Time (IST), making it more accessible for students across South East Asia.

Classes are conducted live via Zoom, where students will receive real-time instruction, engage in discussions, and participate in guided filmmaking exercises. Before the course begins, each student will be provided with an NYFA email address, which they will use to log in to Zoom and access course materials.

Core Subjects

Learn to Make a Short Film at NYFA

In our 1-Week Online Film Camp for teens, students aged 14-17 receive an exciting introduction to the craft of storytelling through film. Staying true to our hands-on approach, as in all of the New York Film Academy filmmaking camps, students have the opportunity to write, direct, shoot and edit their own short project. ​Production exercises and projects are completed during a weekday evening, including the execution of the shooting plan and post-production​.

The pace of this online film class is feverish as each student completes a short film to be screened at the conclusion. No experience is required to attend.

Over the course of one week, students will explore essential photography techniques, digital imaging, and personal style development through a combination of shooting labs, studio work, field trips, and image editing workshops.

Students will gain direct experience in capturing and refining images, working with professional equipment, and developing their unique artistic vision. Whether they are beginners or aspiring professionals, this intensive program offers a dynamic environment where students can refine their skills and produce a compelling body of work.

Students will be required to work on their own DSLR cameras for this program.

Core Subjects

Students will engage in the following core subjects throughout the program:

  • Shooting Lab – This lab is a hands-on opportunity for students to learn professional photography techniques in diverse iconic locations in New York City or Los Angeles, as well as in NYFA’s photo studios. The course covers a wide range of photographic genres and challenges, both aesthetic and technical. With direct guidance from the instructor, students will apply key concepts to assignments of increasing complexity. Field trips will be a major component of the course, allowing students to capture the endless variety of subjects and scenes that New York City and Los Angeles offers.

  • Digital Imaging – In this course, students will explore the possibilities of digital photography using industry standard software. They will learn how to manipulate and enhance images, preparing them for both artistic and professional use. Instructor-led demonstrations will introduce students to essential techniques such as color correction, image depth enhancement, panoramic creation, RAW file conversion, and batch processing. Additional assignments may include light painting and web portfolio preparation, ensuring students leave with polished images that showcase their best work.

  • Vision and Style – This course introduces students to key conceptual trends in photography and encourages them to develop their own personal style. Through critical discussions, visual analysis, and hands-on projects, students will refine their ability to communicate visually. By studying influential photographers and analyzing their work, students will gain a deeper understanding of artistic identity, the history of photography, and how their work fits into the larger photographic landscape. This course pushes students to move beyond technical mastery and embrace their creative instincts.

  • Photo I – This course provides students with a working knowledge of modern DSLR cameras, lenses, and lighting techniques. Students will develop their understanding of composition, color, and perception, learning how to use the camera as a powerful storytelling tool. Discussions will explore the distinctions between art and commerce, helping students understand different career paths in photography. Through weekly assignments, students will conceptualize, shoot, edit, and present their work, receiving feedback in a collaborative classroom environment.

Final Project

By the end of the program, each student will complete a final portfolio of finished photographs, copied onto a USB drive and available to download from Google Drive after the program ends. This portfolio will showcase images across multiple genres, demonstrating the student’s technical skills, artistic growth, and personal style.

Learn How to Make a Movie as a Kid

During NYFA’s level two kids film camp, students who have completed a prerequisite program may return to advance their filmmaking skills. This hands-on, one-week camp gives students aged 10-13 the opportunity to complete their own film project and study additional filmmaking disciplines, including cinematography, screenwriting, and directing.

Program Description

1-Week Filmmaking Camp for Kids II

Prerequisite: 1 or 2-Week Filmmaking Camp I for Kids

In this exciting and fun film program, students develop, pre-produce, and create their own original short films using state-of-the-art cameras and equipment. Classes focus on genre and style in digital cinematography, screenwriting, editing practice and aesthetics, and directing for cinema. Students also learn crucial crew roles and study set and costume design, locations, shot choices, and coverage. The finished product is a short film of up to five minutes.

At the end of the camp, a special presentation features content created during the program, and family and friends are welcome to attend. Students also receive a USB drive from NYFA with a digital copy of their work. During the program, students need to provide their own lunch.

Hands-on Filmmaking for Kids

The New York Film Academy’s 1-Week Online Summer Filmmaking Camp introduces kids to the world of filmmaking and provides a fun and supportive environment to help them explore their passion for visual storytelling. Similar to all NYFA programs, our kids filmmaking camp emphasizes learning by doing, and students work with their own digital cameras, such as an iPhone, and learn how to compose, direct, light and edit for quality images.

Program Description

Program Name: 1-Week Filmmaking Camp for Kids – Online

Class Descriptions

Screenwriting – Students learn the basics of screenwriting structure and build a fundamental understanding of story. Students brainstorm and formulate their film ideas in this class.

Directing – Students are taught the language of cinema and how a director effectively communicates a story to their audience. Focused on aspects of visual storytelling and continuity-style scene coverage, this class also teaches the way a director prepares for production.

Cinematography – This class introduces students to the fundamentals of cinematography, creative visual storytelling and camera operation as applied to shooting with a mobile device.

Editing – Students learn the basics of editing theory and application using iMovie, apps like Adobe Rush or other available options on a device. Students learn skills such as creating a timeline, inserting and splicing footage, special digital effects like transitions, filters and project exporting.

Final Screening/Graduation – This class celebrates the students final work by viewing all the films in a screening and discussing what directorial choices were effective and why.

The New York Film Academy’s 1-Week Online Filmmaking Level II Camp for Kids has been designed by our faculty of professional filmmakers to help guide returning students in the next steps towards creating their own script and filming a short teaser.

 

Program Description

Program Name: 1-Week Filmmaking Camp for Kids II – Online

This online filmmaking II program is a great stepping stone for those interested in moving forward with their education and career as a filmmaker.  Students will learn how to write a more complex script and how to record, edit and use a teaser for pre-production needs. Each filmmaker will leave ready for the two week level II class, or have a strong foundation to begin independently creating more advanced scripts and teasers from home.

Class Descriptions

Writing II – Focused on proper screenplay formatting and detail around characters, action and dialogue, students begin right away with getting their story ideas on the page.

Genre and Styles – A deeper dive into creative filmmaking styles and genres to hone in on each individual filmmaker’s taste and a plan for execution.

Directing II – Preparing filmmakers for how to conceptualize what they will need to make their short teaser as well as more preparation for directing actors.

The Sizzle Reel- A shooting and editing lab used to give students time in class to work on their teasers or director’s reel with the teacher’s guidance and support.

Intro to Producing – Fundamentals of producing. Focusing on producing your own work and what is needed to begin the pre-production process for a short indie film.

Campers will leave the program with:
