Things To Do at NYFA South Beach
South Beach is an excellent location for aspiring filmmakers, artists, photographers, and visual storytellers, with it’s own unique flavor. At NYFA’s South Beach campus, students can easily connect their peers in groups, organizations, and special events. Off-campus, students can explore everything Miami has to offer, as the city has a plethora of world-class restaurants, cafes, theaters, cinemas, beaches, parks, and music venues.
At NYFA South Beach, students may begin to build their creative networks and make life-long connections while pursuing their artistic goals. To support and engage students, NYFA offers on-campus activities and events that include guest speaker lectures, movie nights, small, seasonal student gatherings, as well as trips to popular Miami tourist destinations. Students can stay up-to-date with on-campus events and activities through our event portal on the Student Hub.
Miami is a fast-paced, energetic city that is exceptionally diverse, artistic, and fun for aspiring storytellers. During their time at NYFA South Beach, students can visit a variety of entertainment venues for special events, such as the New World Center Symphony Space, the Miami Convention Center, and The Filmore Miami Beach, which are within walking distance of the NYFA South Beach campus.
As Miami is a city dedicated to visual art, there is also a wide selection of independent cinemas, theaters, and museums such as the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre, GableStage at the Biltmore, the Coral Gables Art Cinema, the Perez Art Museum, ICA Miami, The Art Deco Colony Theater, as well as venues for improv and comedy shows. There are also ample green and outdoor spaces, such as Miami Beach and local parks such as Everglades National Park, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and the Venetian Pool. Miami uses these spaces to host unique events such as “Movies at the Park,” a series with a broad range of films and performances from the drama of Shakespeare and opera to tango and contemporary dance.
Students can also explore diverse neighborhoods such as Wynwood Arts District, The Design District, Coral Gables, and Coconut Grove. Within a short drive, students can also visit additional Florida attractions such as the Ancient Spanish Monastery, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, and the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
Students can attend local industry events such as the annual art fair Art Basel, the Ultra Music Festival, the Miami Book Fair International, the Miami International Boat Show, as well as the Miami International Film Festival and the Miami Latin Film Festival, as well a number of annual and seasonal film festivals. As Miami has a close-knit community of filmmakers, there are frequent local meet-up groups, events, mixers, and independent festivals, such as FilmGate Miami’s monthly “I’m Not Gonna Move to LA” series.
