Create Your Demo Reel at NYFA
The digital editing workshops at NYFA are designed to teach students essential skills and the editor’s approach to visual storytelling through hands-on projects. These projects range from short films, such as a short documentary, to narrative scene work to video content for social media.
Throughout our programs, students to work in a fast-paced, creative setting while contributing to their demo reel. The projects listed are examples of the types of work that students will complete and not an all-encompassing list. For more information, please see the course catalog.
Projects
By Workshop
Montage Video
In the Montage Video Project, students will create a montage in a 2-5 minute video using the theoretical principles of montage editing. Students will add a selection of music and learn how to do an audio mix, applying the fundamental concepts of 3-point editing and montage editing theories to edit the project.
Short Documentary Film
The Short Documentary Film Project is 3-5 minutes in length. For this project, students will use footage provided in class that shows a story following one character or multiple characters, with a beginning, middle, and end.
Dialogue Project
During our on-campus workshops, students will shoot a scene as a group. By being on set, students are able to get a taste of directing, lighting, audio and camerawork, which strengthens their eye and deepens their knowledge as an editor. This footage is used to complete the Dialogue Project. For this project, students are given a pre-scripted, short, straightforward dialogue scene that they then storyboard and shoot together as a group.The narrative dialogue project will be edited from the scene shot in class. Students must maintain continuity and enhance the film’s narrative with their editing decisions.
Social Media Video
This project allows students to incorporate their Avid Media Composer, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Photoshop skills they learned to make a short and impactful video ideal for social media.
Demo Reel
The Demo Reel is the summation of the projects and highlights the skills learned during the course, and acts as a visual calling card.
Montage Video

In the Rhythm Exercise, digital editing students will create a 5-15 second animation using shapes, color, movement and sound. Students choose a piece of music and then, considering the elements of design, will create an animation with specific rhythm informed by the specifics of the music selection.
Setting the Mood Project
In the Setting the Mood Project, students will use filters and effects to create three different moods or aesthetics for one scene. Students will transition between the different aesthetics while maintaining cohesion within the design.
Title Sequence
In the title sequence project, editing students learn to create captivating title sequences for a project of their choice. This project allows students to understand how to set the tone, engage the audience and reinforce brand identity.
