AWARD-WINNING ACTOR AND NYFA BOARD MEMBER MATTHEW MODINE’S FULL METAL DIARY PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT AT AXIOM CONTEMPORARY

February 26, 2018

Matthew Modine, award-winning actor, activist, director, and New York Film Academy (NYFA) Board Member, shares his fresh photography exhibit at Axiom Contemporary in Santa Monica on Friday Feb. 23. After a record-breaking opening for an audience of 70,000 at the 23rd Annual LA Art Show, Modine’s Full Metal Diary was celebrated with an artist reception at Axiom Contemporary from 6-9 p.m.

The exhibition offers a truly behind-the-scenes, collaborator’s view of life on the set of Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. Now, at the 30th anniversary of the film’s release, Modine’s black-and-white photo series offers a rarely seen, intimate glimpse of one of cinema’s greatest directors at work, while also offering the unique perspective of a young artist’s process over the two years of collaboration it took to complete the film. Kubrick himself had suggested that Modine record his experiences on set for the 1987 feature, and Modine captured the photo series behind the scenes while performing on camera as Private Joker.

“Being invited to work with Stanley Kubrick certainly altered my life,” Modine has said. “I can’t relate him to any other director because I was there for two years. That just doesn’t happen anymore. The experience with Stanley wasn’t just a friendship. It was a mentorship, a job. It became something that was much more profound. It changed the way I think about art.”

Perhaps best known for his role in Full Metal Jacket, Modine has won the SAG Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series award for the role of Dr. Martin Brenner in Netflix’s Stranger Things, and is also known and loved for his performances in Birdy, Vision Quest, and Married to the Mob. Last year, Modine also appeared in the British comedy of manners The Hippopotamus, directed by NYFA alumnus John Jencks.

Modine has said that NYFA founder Jerry Sherlock had a profound impact on his life, and this relationship has inspired the long collaboration between the prolific actor and the Academy. Along with serving as a New York Film Academy Board Member, Modine has visited the NYFA community as a popular guest instructor, as well as holding a special master class with veteran students.
