Camp Name: 1-Week Filmmaking Camp for Kids I

Throughout NYFA’s filmmaking for kids programs, students learn about film and get extensive training from industry professionals. The one-week film camp teaches filmmaking and content creation skills in just a few days, teaching students to compose, direct, and edit quality videos using state-of-the-art cameras and equipment. Over the course of the week, students work as assistant directors, camera operators, and actors, and create a short, silent film.

At the end of the camp, content is featured in a special presentation open to friends and family. Students receive a USB drive from NYFA with a digital copy of their work. During the camp, students will need to provide their own lunch.

In NYFA’s summer film camp for kids, students aged 10-13 learn to write and direct their own films and video content. This dynamic program provides students with the opportunity to gain actual filmmaking experience, following NYFA’s learn-by-doing approach.

Program Description

Camp Name: 2-Week Filmmaking Camp for Kids I

During our two-week filmmaking summer camp, students learn how to compose, direct, and edit quality images, working with industry-standard digital cameras and equipment. In the first week, students create a short silent film. In the second week, students create a second film, building upon their knowledge from week one. Throughout the program, students acquire hands-on experience and knowledge about the filmmaking process. In addition to serving as directors and writers on their own projects, they also build practical set experience, acting as assistant directors, actors, and camera operators in peer productions.

At the end of the camp, films are celebrated in a screening open to friends and family. Students receive a USB drive from NYFA with a digital copy of their work. During the camp, students need to provide their own lunch.

Learn How to Make a Movie as a Kid

During the level two film camp for kids, students who have already attended NYFA in a prerequisite camp may return to gain additional experience in filmmaking. Through actual on-set experience, students aged 10-13 quickly build upon their creative and technical skills while making their own unique film content.

Prerequisite: 1 or 2-Week Filmmaking Camp I for Kids

The 2-Week Filmmaking II Camp offers students an opportunity to create a longer film project up to five minutes. Throughout the program, students learn by doing, fulfilling a number of on-set film crew roles. Students study theory, taking classes in digital cinematography, screenwriting, editing practice and aesthetics, as well as directing for cinema. Students also learn on set and costume design, locations, shot choices, and coverage.

At the end of the program, films are screened in a celebration open to friends and family. Students receive a USB drive from NYFA with a digital copy of their work. During the camp, students need to provide their own lunch.

Hands-on Filmmaking for Kids

During our 2-week online summer camp, kids bring their stories to life and learn how to compose, direct, light and edit for quality images. In the first week, campers create a short silent continuity film, working with their own digital cameras, such as an iPhone. In the second week, students build upon their knowledge to create a film of greater complexity, to be viewed at their end of camp screening.

Program Name: 2-Week Filmmaking Camp for Kids – Online

Class Descriptions

Screenwriting – Students continue to explore screenwriting structure and work to build a fundamental understanding of story, adding elements of dialogue to their second film.

Directing – Students learn more about how a director communicates a story to their audience. Focused on aspects of visual storytelling and continuity-style scene coverage, this class also teaches the way a director prepares for production.

Cinematography – Students learn the fundamentals of cinematography, creative visual storytelling and camera operation as applied to shooting with a mobile device.

Editing – Students learn the basics of editing theory and application, gaining experience in apps such as iMovie and Adobe Rush. Students continue to learn how to create a timeline, insert and splice footage, add in special digital effects like transitions and filters and how to successfully export their projects.

Final Screening/Graduation – The final screening celebrates the students final work by viewing all the films in a screening. Students also participate in a lively discussion about directorial choices.

In the 2-Week Online Filmmaking Level II Camp for Kids our amazing faculty of industry professionals will help guide returning students in the next steps toward developing their own script, a deeper dive into the pre-production process and directing actors live.

Program Description

Program Name: 2-Week Filmmaking Camp for Kids II – Online

This online filmmaking II program is a great stepping stone for those interested in moving forward with their education and career as a filmmaker, especially those with a focus on writing and directing. Students will leave knowing how to write a more complex script, run casting sessions, a deeper understanding of pre-production and how to direct actors.

Class Descriptions

Writing II – Focused on proper screenplay formatting and detail around characters, action and dialogue, students begin right away with getting their story ideas on the page.

Genre and Styles – A deeper dive into creative filmmaking styles and genres to hone in on each individual filmmaker’s taste and a plan for execution.

Directing II – Preparing filmmakers for how to conceptualize what they will need to make their short teaser as well as more preparation for directing actors.

The Sizzle Reel- A shooting and editing lab used to give students time in class to work on their teasers or director’s reel with the teacher’s guidance and support.

Intro to Producing – Fundamentals of producing. Focusing on producing your own work and what is needed to begin the pre-production process for a short indie film.

Pre-Production Workshop – Fine tuning any last changes on the script made in week one and preparing materials for the next steps of production including; Character breakdowns, synopsis, casting notices.

Casting Workshop – Together with the level II actors, filmmakers will curate and run a comprehensive submission, call back and casting process with the actors from our Acting Level II.

Directing Actors II – An in depth approach on how to work with actors in a creative, respectful and efficient manner to lift the story from the page.

Directing Workshop – Actors and Directors come together to rehearse the new short film scripts they’ve officially cast.

Table Reading – The culmination of both weeks is a live table reading with actors performing the directors final work.

Through exercises, games, and group work, students gain a better understanding of the acting craft, completing a filmed monologue and scene. No experience is required to attend.

During this dynamic summer camp, students learn fundamental film acting techniques including blocking, partner and moment to moment work, as well as given circumstances. As this camp is incredibly hands-on, students also spend time learning audition techniques and and enhancing their memorization skills.

As a final project, students complete a short scene. These performances are recorded by our faculty, and edited by our in-house editors. At the conclusion of the camp, students receive a USB drive from NYFA with a digital copy of their work, and may invite their family and friends to a screening of their work. In NYFA’s level-two acting summer camp for kids, aspiring actors and performers aged 10-13 build on the skills developed in our level-one acting for film camps. This hands-on program gives students the opportunity to improve their performance and audition abilities, helping them continue to build experience in front of the camera.

Program Description

Camp Name: 2-Week Acting Camp for Kids II

Prerequisite: 1 or 2-Week Acting for Film Camp for Kids

During this intensive acting camp, aspiring actors can continue to pursue their interest in film acting. Similar to our level-one camp, students learn under the mentorship of our experienced instructors of active actors and directors. Through hands-on games, exercises, and group activities, students practice blocking, partner, moment to moment, and given circumstances work, and build their audition and memorization skills.

Students who attend the level-two acting camp complete two contrasting monologues, as well as a scene with a professional actor, which are recorded by our faculty and edited by our in-house editors. At the completion of the camp, students receive a USB drive with a copy of their projects. Students may also invite family and friends to a screening of their final work. During the camp, students need to bring their own lunch.

Acting for Kids at NYFA

The New York Film Academy’s 2-week Online Acting For Film Camp gives kids the chance to discover or hone their acting chops. Throughout their time at the summer online acting for film camp, students will study fundamental acting techniques and practice them in front of their peers. By the end of camp, kids will gain a better understanding of the acting craft and the opportunity to showcase their own filmed monologues and scenes.

Camp Name: 2-Week Kids Acting for Film Camp – Online

Our summer acting camp for kids is led by professional actors in TV, film, and stage. These passionate professionals transfer their real-world expertise to the next generation of actors. During the two weeks, each camper will complete one taped monologue and scene. Our innovative acting classes encourage kids to develop the techniques and confidence they need to create believable performances for the camera. Campers apply what they learn to exercises designed to encourage their screen acting ability.

Class Descriptions

Monologues –  Analyzing, Developing, Staging, personal connection, imaginary circumstances, rehearsals, performance, submitting self tape.

Improv – Students will explore play and storytelling as well as the basic tenets of improv.

Acting for Film – Acting for the frame size, reaction shots, the magic of editing, marks.

Business of Acting/Audition – The basics of audition technique and intro to the business.

Scene Study – Scene analysis to prepare for cold readings and self tape auditions.

Acting for Kids at NYFA

The 2-Week Online Acting for Film II Camp for Kids  will use all of the materials and practice from the first week (see level II week one description) to experience the step by step process of submitting, auditioning and booking a role.

Program Description

Camp Name: 2-Week Kids Acting for Film Camp II – Online

In collaboration with our level II Filmmaking class, the Acting students will go through a casting call from beginning to end. From reading breakdowns and character descriptions to how to seek out acting opportunities, we dive into the ‘business of’ in this second week. This program is designed to help demystify the industry, introduce professional collaboration and instill confidence in submitting and presenting themselves on a professional level. The second week of this camp will culminate in a live table reading of these collaborative final projects.

Class Descriptions

Headshots/Resumes – Reviewing and creating your own headshots and resumes from home.

Acting for Film II – Students will explore play and storytelling through more advanced exercises and audition practice.

Making a reel – Using pieces from current and previous programs, students will learn the basics of how to make your own reel.

Characters – Through gesture and voice work, students will deepen their approach to the art of creating specific characters.

Improv II – Students learn not only the comedic uses of improv but also how to be present in the moment in dramatic scenes as well.

Acting For Film II – Students will continue to build on their techniques and continue to hone their own process particularly with a focus on auditioning.

Industry Fundamentals – After having created their own materials in the one week session, students learn more in depth about the submission and call back process. How to read breakdowns and casting notices and prepare for them.
