3-Week Filmmaking Summer Camp for Teens I

3-Week Summer Filmmaking Camp for Teens

Learn How to Shoot a Short Movie at NYFA

During this intensive filmmaking camp, students aged 14-17 get a hands-on introduction to filmmaking. Throughout the hands-on summer camp, students learn how to shoot a short movie through coursework and projects, writing, directing and editing their own content. No experience is required to attend.

Program Description Camp Name: 3-Week Filmmaking Camp for Teens

The 3-Week Filmmaking Program is an intensive, hands-on course designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of visual storytelling. Through a combination of structured lessons, practical exercises, and production workshops, students will explore the director’s craft and learn how to translate their ideas into compelling visual narratives using the digital format.

Core Subjects

This program expands on the fundamental principles of filmmaking by incorporating more in-depth training in the following core subjects:

  • Director’s Craft: Through a well balanced combination of lecture and hands-on exercises, students will learn the language of filmmaking and how to make creative and technical choices that translate their vision into effective and compelling visual storytelling.

  • Writing: Students will begin with an introduction to story structure and script formatting before workshopping their own film ideas, developing a strong foundation in story arc, pacing, character, and narrative beats.

  • Hands-On Camera and Lighting: In these sessions, students will deepen their understanding of cinematography, covering both the creative and technical aspects of capturing visually engaging images and working with available and controlled lighting.

  • Production Workshop: Provides students with an instructor-guided set experience, allowing them to gain practical insight and familiarity with the collaborative dynamics of a working film set.

  • Directing Actors: Students will receive instruction and practice in working with performers, focusing on communication, technique, and directing methods to elicit effective performances.

  • Digital Editing: Through hands-on practice in Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve, students will learn the fundamentals of post-production, refining their films through editing and sound design.

Course Projects

By the end of the program, each student will have written, directed, shot, and edited two short films: a continuity film and a music/montage film. Both projects will be non-dialogue films, meaning that both will not include any dialogue, written or spoken, relying entirely on visual storytelling, music, and sound effects to communicate narrative, mood, and emotion. Effectively steering these young storytellers into the habit of showing instead of telling.

  • Continuity Film (First Project) – The continuity film will focus on maintaining seamless visual continuity and flow, allowing students to explore essential filmmaking techniques. Through this project, students will learn how to construct clear, engaging sequences where the movement and progression of time feel natural and cohesive.
  • Music/Montage Film (Second Project) – For the music/montage film, students will take a more expressive approach, where music and sound effects become a pivotal aspect of storytelling. By experimenting with rhythm, juxtaposition, and visual composition, students will explore how the relationship between sound and image can shape mood, tone, and meaning. This project encourages creative editing techniques and a dynamic approach to narrative construction.

In addition to creating their own films, students will work as crew members on their classmates’ projects, ensuring a well-rounded, immersive, and highly collaborative filmmaking experience. By the end of the program, each student will have developed a stronger command of visual storytelling and a deeper understanding of how to craft engaging films using only images, music, and sound design.

3-Week Filmmaking Summer Camp for Teens II

3-Week Filmmaking Summer Camp II for Teens

Make A Short Film at NYFA

During this intensive filmmaking summer camp, students who have taken the twelve-weekend camps or the three, four, six-week camps may return to further their skills in visual storytelling and content creation. Throughout this summer program, students aged 14-17 make a short film, practicing techniques in writing, camera, lighting, sound, directing, and editing.

Program Description Camp Name: 3-Week Filmmaking Camp II for Teens

Prerequisite: 12-Weekend, 3, 4, 6-Week Filmmaking Camp

The 3-Week Filmmaking Level 2 Program is an advanced, immersive course designed for students who are ready to take a deeper dive into the craft of filmmaking, focusing on the complexities of directing, cinematography, writing, editing, and sound—all tailored toward the creation of a single, dialogue-driven film. This program provides a more concentrated and intensive filmmaking experience, where students refine their skills by working on a single project from development to post-production, ensuring a more nuanced and cinematic approach to storytelling.

Through hands-on training, students will explore the artistic and technical challenges of crafting a film with dialogue, including scene coverage, blocking for actors, sound design, and editing for performance and pacing. This is our only advanced filmmaking program and a natural progression from our Level 1 filmmaking programs. It is open exclusively to students who have completed at least a 3-Week Filmmaking Program, though it is strongly recommended for those who have completed the 6-Week Filmmaking Program. Depending on a student’s prior filmmaking experience, those who have not completed a prerequisite course with us may still be eligible to enroll, pending an evaluation of their skills and knowledge to ensure they are prepared for the demands of this program.

Core Subjects

  • Director’s Craft: Students will refine their visual storytelling skills, learning how to plan and execute complex scenes with dialogue, balancing camera movement, blocking, and performance direction to enhance their narrative.

  • Writing: With a focus on dialogue-driven storytelling, students will refine their understanding of scene structure, subtext, character voice, and pacing, ensuring their scripts are dynamic and engaging.

  • Digital Cinematography: Students will operate a more advanced digital camera, gaining hands-on experience with lens choices, depth of field, camera movement, and shot composition, all with an emphasis on visual storytelling within dialogue scenes.

  • Advanced Lighting: This class delves deeper into cinematic lighting techniques, exploring how to use light and shadow to shape emotion, direct focus, and create meaning within a scene, with an emphasis on multi-character dialogue scenes and layered lighting setups.

  • Production Workshop: Students will experience an instructor-guided set environment, practicing on-set collaboration, troubleshooting production challenges, and ensuring efficient scene execution under real-world filmmaking conditions.

  • Directing Actors: Students will learn techniques for working with performers, focusing on effective communication, blocking for the camera, emotional authenticity, and capturing natural performances in dialogue-heavy scenes.

  • Digital Editing: Students will apply advanced editing techniques, learning how to shape performance, manage pacing, and cut dialogue scenes effectively. They will also explore sound design, dialogue editing, and continuity in performance to ensure seamless storytelling.

  • Sound Recording: Since sound is a crucial component in dialogue films, students will receive in-depth instruction on sound recording equipment, boom operation, and mixing techniques. They will learn set protocol for sound, dialogue leveling, syncing audio in post-production, and crafting a strong soundscape to enhance their film.

  • Producing: Students will gain a foundational understanding of pre-production planning, scheduling, casting, and set logistics, ensuring they can manage the complexities of executing a dialogue-driven film efficiently and professionally.

Course ProjectOver the three weeks, students will write, direct, shoot, and edit a Dialogue Film, applying everything they’ve learned in a single, highly focused project.

  • Dialogue Project – As one of the most complex filmmaking exercises at the introductory level, this project requires students to integrate both visual and auditory storytelling elements, crafting a film that is engaging through both performance and cinematic language. Because dialogue adds an additional layer of complexity, students will receive specialized training in dialogue recording, sound leveling, and dialogue editing, ensuring clarity and emotional impact. They will also work closely with actors to deliver natural, nuanced performances, learning the intricacies of directing dialogue for the screen.

In addition to directing their own projects, students will rotate through key crew positions on their classmates’ films, gaining hands-on experience in cinematography, sound recording, assistant directing, and editing, ensuring they graduate with a comprehensive, real-world filmmaking skill set.

By the end of the program, students will have developed a deeper command of cinematic storytelling, the ability to craft engaging dialogue-driven scenes, and a polished short film showcasing their skills in directing, cinematography, sound, and editing.

3-Week Acting for Film Summer Camp for Teens I

3-Week Acting Summer Camp for Teens

Summer Camp for Acting at NYFA

In this hands-on camp, students aged 14-17 explore their passion for film acting, working under the guidance of our faculty of professional actors and directors. Through assigned monologues, voice, movement, and improvisation exercises, students gain extensive on-camera experience. Students also take classes in audition technique and scene study. No experience is required to attend.

Program DescriptionCamp Name: 3-Week Acting for Film Camp for Teens

The 3-Week Acting for Film Program is an immersive course designed to deepen students’ understanding of the art of acting for the screen. Over the course of three weeks, students will refine their skills, develop their craft, and gain valuable on-camera experience through intense scene study, character development, and practical techniques. With more time to explore and perfect their acting abilities, this program goes beyond introductory training to provide a nuanced understanding of the demands and techniques specific to film acting.

Core Subjects

Students will engage in the following core subjects throughout the program:

  • Monologue: Students will work on an assigned monologue, working closely with their instructor to perfect their delivery, physicality, and emotional connection to the material. The monologue will be filmed and edited by professionals, providing students with a high-quality version for their portfolio.

  • Acting for Film: With a focus on the subtlety and specificity of film acting, students will learn to adjust their performances based on shot size, camera movement, and continuity. They will also practice maintaining emotional authenticity while shooting scenes out of sequence.

  • Scene Study: This class builds on the fundamentals of acting through an in-depth study of scripted scenes. Students will analyze their scenes, explore character relationships, and refine their performances, much like the professional process of preparing for a role in a film or television production before collaborating with a director to shape their final performance.

  • Audition Technique: Students will be introduced to on-camera auditioning, cold reading skills, and the preparation techniques necessary for success in professional film and television auditions, while also gaining experience in making quick adjustments based on feedback from their instructor, just as a casting director would in a real audition.

  • Voice & Movement: This course helps students develop physical and vocal freedom, ensuring they can fully embody their characters and deliver performances that are both expressive and natural.

  • Improvisation: In this dynamic, engaging, and fun class, students will develop their improvisational skills, learning how to trust their instincts and embrace spontaneity on set. Improvisation helps students hone their ability to think quickly, respond to their fellow actors, and stay present in every scene.

  • The Business of Acting: Students will explore the professional side of acting, learning about self-marketing, headshots, resumes, and securing auditions and representation. Taught by active industry professionals, this course provides real-world insights into networking, audition strategies, and building a successful acting career.

Final Projects

By the end of the program, students will have filmed and received a professionally edited version of:

  • Monologue: A key part of the program, the monologue will be filmed and edited in-house by professional filmmakers under the direction of the same instructors who worked with the students throughout the program. This high-quality video will serve as a critical piece of the student’s acting portfolio.

  • Scene: Students will be paired up to perform a scene that will also be shot and edited by professionals. This allows students to explore the art of scene work, build chemistry with a partner, and deepen their understanding of the collaborative nature of film acting. The scene will be a valuable addition to their reel.

Collaboration with Filmmaking Students

In addition to the monologue and scene, students will also have the unique opportunity to be cast in one of the 3-Week Filmmaking Program’s student films. These student films are silent films that rely on visual storytelling, performance, and sound design, but do not feature dialogue. This experience allows students to apply their acting skills in a non-verbal context, focusing on the nuances of physical performance, expression, and emotional communication without the reliance on spoken words, while collaborating with their peers from the Filmmaking program also as additional crew in their films.
