Whether you’re brand new to editing or looking to sharpen your skills, this full-time, immersive course is designed to help you master the essentials of post-production. Over an intensive period, you’ll dive into the techniques used in filmmaking, media, entertainment, and beyond, gaining both technical expertise and creative confidence.
This workshop blends practical projects with in-depth coursework, giving you a solid foundation in editing with DaVinci Resolve—an industry-standard tool known for its powerful editing, color grading, and sound design capabilities. You’ll learn cutting techniques, post-production workflows, media management, sound design, basic effects, and color correction, all while working on real projects that build your portfolio.
Each day includes a mix of interactive classes and supervised lab time, ensuring you get plenty of hands-on experience with guidance from expert instructors. CLASS DETAILS
Each week will include a combination of lectures and editing lab sessions, where students will apply what they’ve learned under the teacher’s supervision. Editing lab days will provide hands-on experience with editing, allowing students to work on their projects while receiving personalized guidance and feedback.
Software: DaVinci Resolve
- Introduction to DaVinci Resolve (UI, Workspaces)
- Project setup, media organization, and database creation
- Importing footage & file management (external vs. internal drives)
- Basic editing tools (cut, trim, ripple delete, timeline management)
- Keyboard shortcuts for efficiency
- Practical Exercise – Students will work with stock footage and music to craft a short sequence, focusing on building a cohesive narrative from unrelated clips. Teacher supervision and feedback will be provided throughout the lab time.
- Multi-layered editing & working with multiple timelines
- Transitions, speed adjustments, and retiming
- Introduction to documentary editing: storytelling through real footage
- Working with interviews: structuring a narrative through soundbites
- Using B-roll effectively to complement interviews
- Practical Exercise – Students will have two options for working with real footage provided by NYFA, exploring different approaches to documentary storytelling. Teacher supervision and feedback will be provided during editing time.
- Keyboard Shortcuts – Continued focus on refining editing speed and efficiency with
essential shortcuts.
- The importance of rhythm and pacing in dialogue editing
- J-cuts and L-cuts for seamless conversational flow
- Managing multiple camera angles and maintaining continuity
- Basic Fairlight Tools – Adjusting audio levels, cutting dialogue, and simple noise reduction
- Practical Exercise – Students will edit a dialogue scene using provided footage, focusing on smooth audio transitions and narrative flow. Teacher supervision and assistance will be provided during the lab time.
- Color Correction vs. Grading
- Color Correction – Correcting exposure, white balance, and fixing color issues in raw
footage. - Color Grading – Creative grading to enhance the mood and tone of a scene.
- Using DaVinci Resolve’s color tools for correction and grading, including basic use of LUTs.
- Practical exercises applying color correction followed by grading.
- Structuring a compelling showreel by selecting and refining previous projects
- Understanding pacing, branding, and personal style in an editing portfolio
- How to Sell Yourself in the Industry
- How to present a strong portfolio
- Networking strategies and where to find opportunities
- Freelancing vs. studio work
- Understanding client needs and project pitches
- Export settings for different professional platforms (Vimeo, YouTube, personal website)
- Final Review & Feedback – Students will finalize their showreels, applying lessons learned throughout the course. Teacher supervision and guidance will be provided during editing time.

- DaVinci Resolve (latest version, free or Studio)
Hardware:
- Students will use the NYFA Florence editing lab computers.
- If preferred, students are welcome to bring their own laptops to use for the course.
- Recommended: Mac or Windows PC with a dedicated GPU (recommended: 16GB RAM, SSD storage)
- External hard drive (for project backup and media storage)
