Learn Digital Journalism and Broadcasting at NYFA
In this intensive, hands-on program in New York City, students are introduced to cutting-edge digital technology and methods used professionally in the field, working from our own instructional TV studio. Students learn to research, write, shoot, produce, edit, and even appear on camera, apprenticing under the guidance and direction of professional broadcast journalists.
Students perform an array of studio roles, learning the process of show production as they rotate positions that include anchor, reporter, writer, and producer. Throughout their time at NYFA’s Broadcast Journalism School, students work like professionals, creating their own field reports, investigative segments, cross-platform nonfiction videos, and “explainers” while building essential skills in technical direction.
In addition to building key technical and creative skills, students also learn the traditional ethics of American journalism and the fundamentals of evidence-based, nonfiction storytelling. The core of the program centers on gaining experience behind and in front of the camera, which makes it a great fit for aspiring journalists and content creators who want to refresh their skills and build a reel that demonstrates their best work. Upon graduation, students will earn a college credit-bearing Certificate.

Curriculum
The curriculum of NYFA’s 1-Year Broadcast Journalism Program includes:
- Training in the fundamental principles, techniques, and craft of contemporary journalism through a combination of lecture, demonstration, in-class hands-on production, and project-based work. Students complete rigorous coursework in classes such as Hands-On Camera & Lighting, Hands-On Audio, Production Workshop, and Editing
- Hands-on experience working as a journalist, as well as a variety of positions in our studio space, specifically designed for NYFA. Students take turns handling key on-camera and control room assignments, as well as shadowing industry professionals
- Instruction and close guidance from our faculty, who are award-winning journalists that actively work in the field
- Consistent access to NYFA’s expansive equipment library, working with industry-standard HD and 4K cameras, learning sound, and lighting equipment
- Guest lectures with media industry leaders, such as broadcast journalists, directors, producers, and more

The 1-Year Broadcast Journalism Program is a rigorous, non-degree program that takes place over the course of two semesters. Upon graduation, students will earn a college credit-bearing Certificate.
NYFA’s project-based approach is uniquely suited to the field of Broadcast Journalism, as students learn by doing, gaining professional skills and knowledge through a rigorous progression of real world projects. NYFA’s Broadcast Journalism School is located at our campus in New York. NYFA’s New York City location affords aspiring broadcast journalists a huge variety of professional options and challenges to become resourceful digital reporters and multimedia journalists (MMJs).
