Learn How To Create Short Films and Video Content at NYFA
IN ASSOCIATION WITH RED BULL MEDIA HOUSE
During the Elective 1-Semester Filmmaking Program in association with Red Bull Media House, NYFA students create short films and video content for their own reel. Similar to all of NYFA’s film programs, students learn-by-doing, rapidly building filmmaking skills by writing, shooting, directing, and editing their own original films and content. The elective program includes exploration of multiple facets of filmmaking through real-world experience with professionals at a global, multi-platform media company – Red Bull Media House, including immersion in case studies across a range of key formats and opportunities for hands-on engagement. This workshop is a great fit for aspiring filmmakers and creatives interested in learning the essentials of making their own films and video content, while offering a window into an array of diverse production environments.

Workshop DescriptionWorkshop Name: Elective 1-Semester Filmmaking Workshop
From day one, students participate in an intensive sequence of classes such as Directing, Screenwriting, Digital Camera Technique, Lighting, Digital Editing, and Directing Actors, building essential knowledge in the filmmaking process. Throughout the program, students explore the dramatic mechanics of motion picture storytelling while mastering the critical collaboration between actors and directors.
The Elective curriculum is designed to encompass all primary forms of media. Students explore the many facets of production for a global media company, including an immersive visit to the global headquarters of Red Bull Media House in Salzburg, Austria and take part in a production around a real marketing project in the field.
At the end of the workshop, students can invite family and friends to an exclusive screening. Often, graduates of the Elective 1-Semester Workshop enroll in NYFA’s 1-Year Filmmaking Program to continue their film studies in the US.

CLASS DETAILS
Directing
This Area of Study introduces students to all major aspects of filmmaking. Students will learn concepts to help achieve maximum psychological impact by studying the director’s decisions in camera placement, blocking, staging, and visual image design. Students will be challenged to think comprehensively about their film projects in terms of the economic realities of low-budget student production.
Screenwriting
This Area of Study introduces the established tools and language used in writing a film project. The intersection of story structure, theme, character, tension, and conflict is examined through detailed scene analysis. The in-class discussion provides students with constructive analysis and support. Students are encouraged to tell their stories visually, rather than relying on dialogue.
Editing
This Area of Study presents students with multiple aesthetic approaches to editing film and video. Students will learn how to apply concepts such as temporal continuity and spatial continuity, as well as less traditional discontinuous editing techniques to their work. The Area of Study will also discuss the psychological and emotional effects of editing on the overall story. Additionally, students will learn to operate digital editing software which they will use to edit their own films. Classes are supplemented with individual consultations at the computer.
Cinematography (Hands On Camera And Lighting)
Students undergo intensive training in the use of HD digital video cameras and their accessories. Through hands-on workshops and film tests, they will also learn fundamental lighting techniques. As they progress through the workshop, they learn how to support the mood of the story with lighting choices and experiment with expressive lighting styles.
Elective Classes
Students take part in an immersive exploration of the world of a major media company. Industry professionals will share insights, storytelling resources and case studies in key categories including:
- Documentaries – such as Against the Odds, which follows an unlikely shot at esports’s biggest prize
- Series – such as Born Racers, a series on the young talents of MotoGPTM
- Live events – such as Red Bull Rampage, freeride mountain biking’s most coveted title
- Social media – such as the (Un)serious Race Series, “the most unserious motor racing championship on Earth”
Students will also gain hands-on experience in the field working behind the scenes on a real project, have opportunities to learn from case studies in the classroom and will also get the chance to initiate 1:1 check-ins with industry experts online.
TIMES AND BREAKDOWN BY WEEK
Program Dates: February 16, 2025 – May 10, 2025
These are intensive, full-time Monday through Friday programs that typically run in three x 3hr sessions from 9 AM-6:30 PM or two x 3 hours sessions 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. There are breaks in between sessions. Depending on the workshop, there may be shoots held on the weekend. Students will need to anticipate extra time outside of class to complete assignments, projects, and exercises. Daily class times may vary. The Elective will be integrated throughout the course, including a Red Bull Headquarter visit the week before the semester starts and additional travel to a live project. Study at NYFA Florence, Italy
This special Elective 1-Semester Filmmaking Workshop in association with Red Bull Media is offered exclusively at NYFA’s Florence, Italy campus.
Florence, Italy, famous for its rich history in fine arts, is a place for inspiration, innovation, and immersion. When studying in Florence, NYFA students deepen their understanding and connection to the Italian culture through the creative process of filmmaking and acting for film. As students write, direct, shoot, edit, and act in their own films and build their portfolio, the traditions, and customs of Italy will shape and refine their work.
PROGRAM AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
This course requires the following software and equipment:
- External hard drive (generally costs $30-$200)
- An SD Card
Passport or Visa may be required based on each student’s country of citizenship.
AFTER GRADUATION OPPORTUNITY
The Elective program graduates have the opportunity to interview with Red Bull Media House for an internship after the program.
For students that meet the application requirements, our 1-Semester Filmmaking Workshop may be used as a Study Abroad opportunity. After successfully completing the program, students will have the option to receive a regionally accredited transcript, offering transferability of credits.

In this rigorous workshop, each student writes, shoots, directs, and edits their own films. At NYFA Florence, students make five of their own films and crew on, approximately, fifteen others. In NYFA Australia’s condensed program, students make four of their own films and crews on, approximately, twelve others. On these films, students work in crews of three or four, practicing essential roles including Director, Director of Photography, Assistant Camera Operator, and Gaffer (Lighting Technician).
